The Effects of Imedeen on Testicular Histomorphometry of Mice Treated with Cyclophosphamide

Abstract:
Background and
Purpose
Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a current chemotherapeutic drug which negatively influences the structure of testis. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of Imedeen on histological structure of seminiferous tubules and testosterone in CP treated adult mice.
Material And Methods
In this experimental study, 60 mature male mice were assigned to six groups (n= 10 per group). The animals in control group received normal saline, while in other groups the animals were treated with CP 12mg/kg/day, Imedeen in single dose 111µg/kg/day, Imedeen in two dosage 222 µg/kg/day, CP and Imedeen in one dosage, and CP and Imedeen in two dosage, respectively. After 35 days the animals were sacrificed. Histological and histomorphometrical analysis of testis was performed. Serum levels of testosterone were also evaluated.
Results
In CP treated group the histological study of testis confirmed that the percentage of seminiferous tubules with positive tubular differentiation (37.97±2.97), repopulation index (18.50±0.64) and spermatogenesis index (43.74±2.2) were significantly (P<0.05) lower than the control and Imedeen treated groups, while Imedeen diminished the adverse effects of CP (p<0.05).
Conclusion
These results support the idea that CP can damage the testicular tissue but Imedeen could effectively prevent these adverse effects by inhibiting oxidative processes.
