Platlete- Rich plasma

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of joint disease which leads to chronic and progressive cartilage destruction through unremitting degenerative process. Knee osteoarthritis is the most common involved joint. Unfortunately، there is no effective and radical treatment of osteoarthritis so far. Current treatments are only able to decrease pain and inflammation، but their effects upon disease control are limited. Additionally، quality of life gets better for short period of time. The goal of new recent treatments is based on cartilage repair with respect to its limited capacity for repair. Many research studies have showed that the number of mesenchymal cells in synovial fluid is increased spontaneously by seven folds in osteoarthritis; but aging cartilage is not capable for full renovation due to insufficient growth factors and low number of new developed mesenchymal cells. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) which is rich of high concentration of different growth factors is a pathway for stimulation of cell proliferation and renewing of degenerated joint. This review article، is discussing about different variety of novel treatments in osteoarthritis particularly effects of PRP in knee osteoarthritis. Platelet –rich plasma could be an effective treatment in osteoarthritis in future. However، more investigations and significant efforts are under way to validate outcome and demonstrate the impact of increasingly effective emerging therapies in osteoarthritis.
