SERUM AND ASCITES CA125 LEVEL IN ASCITES PATIENTS

Elevated serum and\or ascietes CA125 were reported in the TB peritoneitis. In this study serum and ascites CA125 were measured in the ascites patients with different etiology to determine if elevated serum and/or ascites CA125 is a diagnostic method for TB peritoneitis. 53 ascites patients(9 TB peritoneitis- 33 cirrhosis- 6 malignancy-5 nephrotic syndrome) and 29 controls were assessed for serum and /or ascites CA125 level. There were not meaningfull differences between TB peritoneitis with cirrhotic and malignancy patient groups (P>0.05) for serum and /or ascites CA125 level but differences between TB peritoneitis with nephrotic syndrome patients and controls were meaningfull (P=0.00). Serum and /or ascites CA125 of all the groups except nephrotic syndrome and controls remarkablly were elevated. These findings suggest that measuring serum and/or ascites CA125 is not a suitable method for diagnosis of TB peritoneitis and this tumor marker increases in the ascites patients with different etiology except nephrotic syndrome.
