The effect of family-centered orientation program on prevention of delirium prevalence in patients with coronary artery disease: a clinical trial

Hospitalization in critical care unit is a stressful issue for patients and families due to the presence of unfamiliar equipment and procedures in the unit. This confusion and unfamiliarity leads to disturbance and even physiological and mental problems in the patients. The main objective of this work is to examine effect of family-centered orientation program on prevention of delirium prevalence in patients with coronary artery disease in CCU.

In this quasi-experimental work in 2013 in Zanjan, in 3 months, 80 inpatients from CCU meeting the criteria of entering to the research, were selected based on sample and convenience sampling in two test and standard groups. For test group, family-centered orientation program was performed. The samples in both groups were examined in terms of delirium problem using the mini mental status examination (MMSE) instrument. Then, the obtained data were analyzed using the t-test and fisher.

Data analysis indicated that delirium incidence in the test group indicated a significant statistical decrease using the T-test with p = 0.002; however this difference was not clinically significant.Discussion and

due to the benefits of family-centered orientation programs to decrease of delirium, using of orientation program is recommended but due to the lack of clinically significant about delirium, large samples and several evaluations of patients seems necessary for studies designs.
