Abstract:
Aim
Investigating the effects of delay in auditory feedback on fluency of speech in children who stutter between ages 6-8 It appears that strutting is a disorder that disintegrates the coordination between one or multiple systems (breathing، making sounds? vocal abilities?) that are involved in development of speech. Stuttering usually develops before the age of 8. Evidence shows direct effect of delay in auditory feedback on fluency of speech in children with stutters. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of auditory delay on the fluency of speech in children between the ages of 6 to 8 who stutter.
Methods
This study is based on an experiment through a pre-exam and post-exam process. The participants consist of 15 children between the ages of 6 to 8 with a stutter. The severity of their stutter، the percentage of spasmodic repetitions of syllables or sounds and also the average flow and fluency of speech was examined in children before and after utilizing the delay auditory method. The qualitative and quantitative data gathered through the Independent T Test، «Person Correlation» and «One Way Variance» was then analyzed by a software called SPSS.
Results
The result of the experiment، collected at 50، 100 and 200 mi. sec. intervals، reveals that the delay auditory method has a direct effect on reducing spasmodic repetition of syllables in all three conditions and circumstances. This test only affects the severity of stutter while studied under (50 and 100 mil. sec.) with little to no effect under (200 mil. sec.) In terms of reduction of spasmodic repetitions، the 200 mil. sec. And effect was more obvious under (200 mil. sec.) test and not so much for the (50 and 100 mil. sec.)
Conclusion
Based on this study، the delay auditory method can improve the fluency of speech in children with stutter. Also، under the same circumstances the average flow of speech is reduced in these children. By guiding children how to slow down the pace of their speech and also teaching the method of prolonging their speech can be a challenge، speech therapists can utilize the delay auditory method in helping children with stutter to learn how to communicate more effectively and readily.
