A review on applications of electrospun nanofibers in food packaging

Food packaging plays an important role in protecting and containing food through manufacture processes, Control, storage, handling and then delivering to customer. Innovation in food packaging industry cause to enhance the quality of foods, make them desirable for costumers, and award them biodegradable properties. Today, Nanotechnology applications in food industry include: encapsulation and delivery of substances in targeted sites, Entering antibacterial nanoparticles into food, Identifying pollutants, improved food storage and so on. Nano food materials packaging may extend food life due to high barrier packaging, improve food safety, alert consumers that food is contaminated or spoiled, repair tears in packaging, and even release preservatives to extend the life of the food in the package. Electro spinning is one of the nanostructured material fabrication techniques that, by using electrostatic forces for producing polymer, ceramic and composite fibers with a diameter ranging from micrometers to nanometers has become to a simple method. Resulting electro spun Nan fibers layers, duo to unique properties such as high specific surface area and porosity, are useful structure in a variety of applications including food packaging industry. Therefore, electro spinning is a promising method for producing active and intelligent food packaging. This paper summarizes the recent progresses in electro spun Nan fibers applications in food packaging industry.
