Investigating the Effect of Grammar Teaching Method on the Sentence Making Process of Students with Hearing Impairments

Abstract:
Objective
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grammar teaching method on the sentence making process of students with hearing impairments.
Method
Among 16 hearing impaired students in the fifth grade who were suffered from severe hearing loss, 12 students have been randomly assigned in two groups. This study has been made on the basis of semi- experimental method. A pretest was carried out for both groups. Then, the grammars were taught to experimental group during 10 sessions of 45 minutes. Regard to content structure of this sudy, the direct method with grammatical approach and the indirect method in narrow and general scale have been specially carried out as a theoretical framework (teacherbased teaching method) in teaching. Afterward, a post- test was administered to both groups. The instrument used in this study was a researcher-made test.
Results
The mean score of the sentence making process obtained through post-test of the experimental group didn’t demonstrate significant differences in the comparison with the mean score of pre-test among two groups and with the post-test of the control group(P>.05).
Conclusion
Findings demonstrate that the teaching grammar method to the deaf students do not improve their sentence making ability.
