Evaluation of the effect of family-centered empowerment model on nutrition and physical activity in patients with asthma

Known as the most common chronic disease, asthma causes dietary and exercise restrictions in patients. One of the proposed methods to adapt to the limitations of chronic diseases is patient empowerment and family support. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementation of family-centered empowerment model on nutrition and physical activities of patients with asthma.
This clinical trial was conducted on 70 patients with asthma, referring to one of the hospitals of Zabol, Iran in 2015. Samples were selected through through randomized convenience sampling and divided into two groups of intervention and control. The family-centered empowerment model was carried out in the intervention group in the form of five 45-minute sessions twice a week. Data was collected using nutrition assessment questionnaire (NAQ) and Beck physical activity questionnaire during four stages before intervention, as well as one week, one month and three months after the intervention. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 16 using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, repeated measures ANOVA, Friedman, independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U.
