The effect of hydro alcoholic extract of Origanum vulgare on weight and serum lipid profile in male Wistar rats

Today, in most countries, hyperlipidemia, followed by atherosclerosis, leads to heart disease such as cardiovascular, and even death. Antioxidants can reduce blood cholesterol and risks of cardiovascular diseases. Origanum vulgar is full of antioxidants. This is because, we will study the effects of Origanum vulgare extract (OVE) on serum lipid profile and weight.
In this study, 28 male Wistar rats were allocated into 4 groups (n=7). The control group received distilled water, three experimental groups received the hydro alcoholic OVE with differentdoses of 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. pretreatment with OVE was performed for 30 days orally through gavage. 2hours after the last gavage, rats were weighted, then serum collected and samples were taken, then level of cholesterol, triglyceride, Low density lipoprotein and High density lipoprotein were measured by means One Way ANOVA in SPSS.
Results of the current study showed that OVE reduced the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, Low density lipoprotein and increases the level High density lipoprotein in three groups received the OVE (50, 75 and 100 mg/kg) compared to the control group. OVE did not cause changes in rats weight.
It seems that OVE can exert the a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases by reduces the levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, Low density lipoprotein and increases High density lipoprotein.
