Hakim Tirmizi in  Attar Neyshabouri's Point of View

Many Sufis are considered as the disciples of Hakim Tirmidhi of which we can refer to Ahmad ibn Mohammad ibn ‘Isa, Hassan ibn ‘Ali Jawzjani, and Abu-Bakr WarraqTirmidhi. A theologian, such as al-Ghazzali, and a great Andalusian mystic, Muhyiddin ibn al-‘Arabi, have highly utilized Tirmidhi’s thought and works, and the latter has regarded him as one of his poles (aqtab). Tirmidhi also has founded a specific school named ‘hakimiyya’.One of Hakim Tirmidhi’s biographies is that one we can see in the fifty eighth part of the masterpiece of ‘Attar Neyshabouri, Tadhkiratu ‘l-Awliyā (Memories of the Saints) which is, as Reynold A. Nicholson, the editor of the work, says in his preface on the book, the oldest work of the kind in Persian language. Although deficient in dates and biographical details of any sort, it contains a large amount of material which is not to be found in the later biographies or anywhere else. Its value as a source for the history of Sufism can hardly be overestimated. It mainly aims at stating moral advices and words of wisdom on which is based the ethical purification. In the current essay, we will try to present a selection of the most important points ‘Attar Neyshabouri has mentioned in his description of Hakim Tirmidhi. Moreover, we will attempt to submit a selection of the wise words of Tirmidhi, quoted by ‘Attar, together with their theosophical, mystical and Quranic documentations, witnesses, and explanations.
