Study of Nigella sativa hydroethanolic extract effects on kidney in male rats induced with gentamicin

Gentamicin is an aminoglycosides antibiotic used to treat several types of bacterial infections. The aim of this study is to investigate of Nigella sativa seed's hydroethanolic extract (NSE) on kidney in male rats induced with gentamicin.
Material and In this experimental study, 42 Wistar male rats divided in 6 groups (n=7) : control (normal saline 2ml/kg, i.p), gentamicin (gentamicin 80mg/kg/day, i.p), positive control ( 400mg/kg NSE, i.p) and treated groups 1,2 , 3 (gentamicin 80mg/kg/day NSE 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg respectively, i.p). Gentamicin used for 10 days then treatment with NSE were done for one week. At the end of experiments the animals were anesthetized with ether and blood samples were collected from heart directly. The BUN, LDH and serum creatinine were analyzed and kidney tissues samples were fixed by formaldehyde for histological assay.
Gentamicin caused necrosis and inflammation in renal cortex and medullary tissues. The NSE decreased serum creatinine , BUN and LDH enzyme significantly in treated animals compared with gentamicin group (P The Nigella sativa can decrease inflammation in renal tissue due to gentamicin and it also decrease BUN, serum creatinine and LDH in treated rats. .
