Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of agricultural processing industry. Information of the amount of investment, labor, raw material and energy consumption for fifteen units was collected for 2000-2010 period and their efficiency was measured using DEA. The units of production were divided into two groups of sugar and food industries. The average technical efficiencies in sugar group and food industry were 95 and 82 percent respectively. The average technical efficiency of all units was 77 percent. Higher managerial relative to scale efficiency indicated that technical inefficiency of scale was maily due to the fact that size of plants was not optimal. Productivity growth on the average was 3.0 percent while for sugar industry was about 3 percent. The most important source of productivity growth in the sugar industry was technological change and technical efficiency is growing in all industries studied.
