Effectiveness of mother's training behavior management on parenting stress and behavioral Problems in children with Opposition defiant disorder

Negative interaction of child - parent is considered as an important factor in the development of externalizing problems such as oppositional defiant disorder and parental stress. So, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of behavior management training of mothers, on decreasing behavior problems and reducing parenting stress of their children with oppositional defiant disorder.
The research design was experimental with pre-and-posttest and control groups. Therefore, 30 mothers whose children were diagnosed as having ODD were chosen through at-hand sampling and were matched into experimental and control groups. Then, they were replaced into two experimental and control. The research tools included parenting stress index, children behavior checklist and behavior performance questionnaire. The behavior management training was performed in nine 90-minute sessions in experimental group. Finally, both groups answered to the questionnaires as posttest.
The data was analyzed using ANCOVA test. The results indicated the effectiveness of training on reducing behavioral problems as well as the decrease in parenting stress in mothers in experimental group, compared to mothers in control group.
The results totally showed that behavioral training of mothers decrease their parenting stress and prevents rising confusion in parent-child relationships and also behavior problems in children with ODD.
