Comparison of Depression between married women working in training hospitals and Instructors compared with housewives aged 25-50 in Shiraz in 2013 - 2014

Depression is the most common psychiatric diagnoses in present century in the world, as well as Iran and its growing trend of prevalence, particularly in women, has created a fundamental problem for mental health. Depression is today considered as a cause of disability in the world and is the fourth disease that imposes a great global burden to the community.
This study aimed to determine the level of depression in married women working in hospitals and Instructors compared with housewives aged 25-50.
This cross-sectional study was conducted on 2162 married women, including healthcare staff (in training hospitals, affiliated to Shiraz University of medical Sciences), instructors (working in governmental sector) and housewives. Data collection tool included demographic questionnaire with 32 questions and Beck’s standard questionnaire with 21 items. Data analysis was performed with SPSS Version 22 using chi-square and ANOVA tests.
The results showed that severe depression was 23.6% in healthcare staff, 18.8% in housewives, and 8.9% in instructors. There was significant relationship between levels of depression, and crisis, mutual understanding with the spouse, stress in the individual and their first degree relatives, instructors in various areas, job satisfaction, and nurses’ working time (P Depression depends on many factors, like job factor. Rotating shifts and stressful work environment are effective indicators of the health care staff and factors predisposing to depression. The prevalence of depression (mild, severe) was higher among workers than housewives and more attention is needed in this field.
