Application of poly(amidoamine) dendrimer as a retarding agent in acrylic dyeing with a basic dye

In this article, poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM) (G=-0.5) was tested as a dye retardant in the dyeing of acrylic fibers with a basic dye (C.I Basic Blue 41: BB41). Factors affecting the rate of dyeing acrylic fibers with the basic dye, such as time and temperature, were studied in the presence of PAMAM. The results showed that the dyeing acrylic fibers with basic dyes in the presence of PAMAM dendrimer have an acceptable uniformity compared to dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) as a cationic surfactant. It seems that the complex formation between the dendrimer and dye molecules might delay dyeing equilibrium time, and consequently, a uniform dyeing is obtained. The kinetics of acrylic fibers with a basic dye in the presence of PAMAM and DTAB was compared based on different empirical equations, parabolic, first-order, and modified Cegarra-Puente model. The modified Cegarra-Puente model was in good agreement with the experimental data compared to the other models.
