The Representation of Muslims and Zionist Myths in World War Z according to Roland Barthe's Semiology

Message:
Abstract:
In the viewpoint of many thinkers, myth in the earliest societies is a secret story which has a root in the reality, and which is culture-making and unrepeatable. However, from the 19th century onward, what is opposed to the reality is named myth. Israel is the only country in the world which has been formed on the basis of myths; thus, to take the myths from it is to take its identity. Meanwhile, Hollywood movie, on one hand, has had a great role in the popularization of Zionist myths. On the other hand, it has made a great attempt to popularize Islamophobia; so it has engaged a concept known as Zombie and has clearly claimed that Muslims are the same as Zombie. The present article is going to answer how Muslims and Zionist myths have been represented in the film Z. For this purpose, first the article explains Zionist myths and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Next, it examines this film through Roger Garaudy’s works and Roland Barthes’ semiology. Finally, according to the results of the research, it concludes that this film tries to show that Muslims behave the same as wild and savage Zombies, while Israel is exactly in the opposite status.
