A Study of the Writings Attributed to the Companions of Imam ʿAli (a)

Author(s):
Abstract:
The teachings that were passed down from the companions of Imam ʿAlī (a) to the later generations make up a part of a valuable Islamic heritage. In this research, we have studied the actual existence of works composed by the companions of Imam ʿAlī (a) as well as the form, quality, limits, content and the type of applicability and benefit
they hold for our present age. We have also explained that Muṣḥaf Fāṭimah (a) is a compilation of works that were penned by Imam ʿAlī (a) and left as part of the legacy of the Imāmah which was not made available to the public. Similarly, Kitāb Mītham al-Tammār, assuming it existed, was a copy of Kitāb ʿAlī (a) or a compilation of narrations
whereas no work from Ḥārith ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Aʿwar has reached us. Aṣbagh ibn Nubātah’s Maqtal al-Ḥusayn (a) was orally transmitted whereas Rabīʿah ibn Sumayʿ’s work which was on the process of collecting taxes is [to be] attributed to Imam ʿAlī (a) and its attribution to Rabīʿah is incorrect. The existence of the [early] work titled:Tasmiyatu man Shahida maʿa Amīr al-Muʾminīn fī Ḥurūbihi is not established. It is possible that it was an orally transmitted work which was only written down much later.
