Proposing a Model for Teaching Media Literacy to Teenagers

With understanding the necessity of media literacy in the new age, many countries over the past decades have focused on teaching this literacy and have tried to consider their local conditions in teaching media literacy concepts. Experiences of different countries are precious in helping us to partly compensate our lag in this field and finding the local pattern for promotion of our media literacy with regard to our local condition. Due to the importance of teenage years and media's main focus on teenagers, this research aims for designing a model for promotion of media literacy of teenagers. For answering the research questions, Grounded theory method was used. In this regards, by extensive study of different patterns and strategies of teaching media literacy in different countries and conducting 15 interviews with senior managers of IRIB, professors of communications, educational planners and media literacy teachers, data has been gathered and coded in three phases. Research results show that in the local model for promotion of media literacy of teenagers in Iran, two institutions (Ministry of Education and IRIB) have important role in media literacy education. In this model, the main goal is to guide and educate teenagers and education requirements of media literacy, teaching methods and educational content are designed based on the primary and secondary objects of the model.
