Survey of hysterectomy and its indication rate in Imam Khomeini medical hospital college in 2009-2011

Hysterectomy is the most common surgery in non-pregnant women in gynecology. Review of hysterectomy indications can provide new viewpoints in treatment of these patients for gynecologists. This study performed to survey indications and methods of hysterectomy in Imam Khomeini medical college hospital in Ahvaz.
This retrospective analytical study performed from March 2009 to March 2011in Imam Khomeini medical college hospital. The data collected from 260 patients who undergo hysterectomy and analyzed with SPSS ver.19 software.
A total of 138 hysterectomies performed in 2010 and 122 in 2011that show a 6.1%decreased in hysterectomy rate from 2010 to 2011. Average age of patients was 45.28±9.8 years ranging from 21 to 83 years. In this study majority of indications were liomyoma(32.3%) and other indications were AUB(31.53%), malignancy of uterus and ovaries(14.61%), uterine prolaps(8.84%), and obstetric emergencies(5.38%). Abdominal hysterectomy had been performed in 91.15% of cases and vaginal hysterectomy in 8.85% of cases.
The majority of indications for hysterectomy in Imam Khomeini medical college hospital in Ahvaz are liomyoma and then AUB and majority of surgical methods are abdominal hysterectomy.
