Relationship between safety Culture and job Satisfaction in employees of a port in the south of Iran

Abstract:
Introduction
Poor safety culture accounts for the majority of occupational accidents which occur as a result of unsafe behaviors. However, establishing safety culture without job satisfaction is doomed to fail. The present research aimed to investigate the relationship between safety Culture and job Satisfaction in employees of a company in Bandar Abbas Shahid Rajaee port
Method
The present descriptive, correlational study was conducted in 2016 on 126 staff of a company in Shahid Rajaee Port. A census method was followed. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire comprising of three parts including demographic information, safety culture, and job satisfaction. SPSS-19 was used to analyze the data.
Results
The mean age of the participants was 37.58 years (SD=6.46). A statistically significant correlation was found between safety culture and job satisfaction (r=.424, p˂.001). Among the safety culture dimensions, the highest correlations were observed between teaching/learning (r=.419, p˂.001) and responsibility (r=.410, p˂.001) on the one hand and job satisfaction on the other hand. The results also showed that the job nature had the highest correlation with safety culture (r=.636, p˂.001).
Conclusion
Managers active and effective participation in creating job satisfaction, consistent supportive supervision, creating job promotion opportunities, fair payment rise, emphasis on the staff’s feeling of responsibility, and holding educational classes will promote job satisfaction and safety behaviors.
