The Relationship between Personality Features and Psychosocial Distress among Nurses of Shafa Hospital in Kerman

Abstract:
Introduction
Cognitive impairment is caused by major problems in the ability of human cognition. Common cognitive problems or psychological distress have an effect on family, social life, personal life or career of a person. In addition, it has an indispensable impact on different jobs. Nursing is one of the most affected jobs in this regard. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between personality features and psychological distress in nurses working in Shafa Hospital in Kerman.
Methods
In this descriptive-correlational research, the study population consisted of all nurses of Shafa hospital (n = 324). We used Morgan table and based on simple random method, 177 nurses entered the study. In order to gather data, we used Oxford-Liverpool inventory of feelings and experiences (O-LIFE) as well as Goldberg big five personality inventory. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16.
Results
Findings showed that there was a relationship in neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, and conscientiousness with psychological distress in nurses of Shafa Hospital in Kerman. Findings highlighted that the role of personality features in psychological distress are different. In this regard, an increase in neuroticism and openness to experiences was accompanied by an increase in psychological distress. By the same token, neuroticism (0.38) and openness (0.42) had the least and conscientious (0.89) had the most impacts, respectively.
Conclusions
As personnel of an organization need to follow their desires and become part of the norms and objectives of an organization, their personality structure can help them to stay and succeed in a job. Thus, personality coordination and job compatibility can prevent psychological distress in nurses and increase their dignity and satisfaction in the organization. This augments the productivity of an organization.
