Considering the Effectiveness of Psychosocial Intervention on Inhibition and Emotion Regulation in Children with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:
Background
Autism spectrum disorder is a cognitive and behavioral-neural disorder. It diagnosed by three features: difficulties in social interactions, disorder in verbal and non-verbal communication and along with limited and repeated schema. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of psychosocial intervention on inhibition and emotion regulation in children with high functioning autism spectrum disorder.
Method
It is a semi-experimental research. The subjects of this study were 24 children that were diagnosed with high functioning autistic disorder that was selected by available sampling method and substituted to two groups (12 students in experimental group, 12 students in control group). In order to survey the subjects, the Behavior rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) and the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) were used. After the pre-test and performing 20 intervention sessions for experimental group, all groups took the post test. In order to analysis the data MANCOVA were used.
Results
The result showed that the inhibition (f= 35/34, p ≤ 0/001) and emotional (f=51/58, p ≤ 0/001) regulation in pre-intervention and post-intervention was significantly different.
Conclusion
We can conclude that psychosocial intervention techniques have positive effect on inhibitory and emotional control.
