A Study of Sirjan Shyryky Kilim Designs and Motifs

Abstract:
Sirjan kilim weaving art which is internationally known, nowadays, suffers from a lack of weavers and intendancy of young girls to this art, and perhaps gives way to industrial Kilims, shortly. In this study, which is fundamental in terms of objective and historical and descriptive in terms of the nature; has been tried identify the designs and motifs used in Shyryky Kilim and Afshar carpet and commonality between them by identifying the cultural and historical background of these hand-woven; and introduce for domestic producers and exporters. Shyryky kilim designs which currently are woven include: Rah Rah, Goldani, Musakhani, Sekalle, Shool, Moharramat, Heshmati, Badami and Integrated
designs. The motifs which are seen in different forms in these weavings are: the motifs of animals and birds, plant motifs, a variety of motifs that are used in margins and text, and small motifs. Sirjan area Kilims are woven mostly by talented and tasteful women, which is considered part of the traditions and customs of this region. In the past, the texture of the Kilims have been mentally but today, offer designs and motifs to weaver with the specific purpose of trade; and most Kilim weavers, weave designs that are more welcomed, and meanwhile, have been forgotten many designs.
