Linguistic Concinnity in Naming Twins (A Case Study of the Names of Kermani Twins Born in 1392 A.H.S.)

This article is an effort in onomastics; a field of linguistics dealing with the various aspects of name and naming including linguistic, social and psychological aspects. One of the subjects so far overlooked in this field is the investigation of linguistic concinnity in naming twins which can be of interest for linguists as well as sociologists. Supposing that similarities in appearance and behavior cause the parents to name their twins by using similar words, the author has tried to study and classify the linguistic concinnity in the names of Kermani twins born in the year 1392 A.H.S. in three linguistic fields (phonology, morphology and semantics) and compare the results of these three levels of analysis. The results of this study show that concinnity in the first and last phonemes, concinnity in word structure and semantic concinnities related to religion, myths and culture are the most important similarities in twins’ names. In the other part of the article, some linguistic trends in naming children are analyzed from a statistical point of view.The results of this study can help sociolinguists with their analyses and can reveal the importance of rhetorical concinnity in naming.
