Abstract:
Of views about Caliphate and Imamate as most challenging issues in Islam, the views of Shah Walīyyullāh Dihlawī, as an important Sunni Muslim theoretician in the Indian Peninsula, are of special significance because of their innovations. Dihlawī provides a new definition of Caliphate and Imamate and takes them as collective obligations (wājib kifā’ī), and then along with the Imami view, and for different reasons, he takes Caliphate and Imamate as principles of the religion. However, a number of objections can be made against his views. For instance, his definition does not cover all religious obligations of a Caliph. Moreover, taking Caliphate to be a collective obligation is in conflict with the view of the majority of Sunni Muslims and is along with the Salafis. Furthermore, although his consideration of Imamate as a principle of religion is in agreement with the Imami position, his evidence and reasons for the view do not meet scholarly criteria. In fact, they involve many contradictions, and contrary to his own claim, most of his views have precedents.
