Abstract:
Introducing new theories in the study of the Quran and understanding religion which was in clear contradiction with the religious discourse governing Egypt made Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (1943-2010) the center of attention of researchers, and made him a subject of academic discussions and debates. Many have judged his views to be in the direction of the Mu'tazilites' thoughts and attribute him to the Mu'tazilites. But this research by examining and analyzing his works could find other patterns for him which their effects on him were not less than Mu'tazilites'. And this shows that he has by no means confined himself to the Mu'tazilite thoughts. Known patterns for him includes: literary school of Amin al-Khuli in commentary, his masters when he was a student in Egypt, the mystical thoughts of Ibn Al-Arabi, the hermeneutic ideas of Western thinkers, and the opinions and ideas of famous scholars of Ash'ari, such as Zarkashi and Soyuti, as well as some non-Muslim Islamologists such as Toshiko Izotsu.
