The Increase of Hookah Use Prevalence in Physical Education Students in 5 Recent Years

Hookah smoking is increasing worldwide. It is estimated the worldwide prevalence of daily hookah smoking is 100 million with shocking rising popularity among the youth. The aim of this study was to assess hookah prevalence in physical education students of Islamic Azad University, Ardabil branch within five recent years. This is a descriptive-analytic study, in physical education students of Islamic Azad University. Data collection was done in April, May and June 2009 and 2014, by means of self-administered two-page questionnaire. Almost half of students randomly participated in this study (162 of all 321students at 2009 and 235 of 467 students at 2014). Hookah prevalence significantly increased within five recent years (P<0.05). The main reason for hookah use was filling free time in both genders. Majority of male students used hookah at café whereas most female students used hookah at their own home. Passive use of hookah has been significantly increased among both genders (P<0.05). Unfortunately, in spite of propaganda about the side effects of hookah use, its use among physical education students has been increased since 2009, required scientific assessment. It seems enhancement of the number of café as well as rising hookah devices at homes is the main reason of significant increase of hookah use among students.
