Abstract:
Background & objective
Training and curricula, in particular, curricula at school and university levels in the educational system, have an irrefutable role in the development of any society. The aim of this study was to compare the degree of satisfaction of midwifery students with teaching lessons of gynecology and infertility in lecture and peer teaching method.
Methods
In this quasi-experimental study, undergraduate midwifery students as a research community, five semester midwifery students (22 students) were selected as research sample and gynecology and infertility as educational materials. Half of the teaching materials were taught by the faculty member in the first eight sessions and second eight sessions were taught by peers. At the end of both teaching methods, students were asked to complete a questionnaire about satisfaction with the teaching methods. Of all students to participate in research, informed consent was obtained.Data were analyzed by SPSS software of 22 version.
Results
The total average score of satisfaction from the lecture method was 83.77 ± 9.74 and the satisfaction with the peer teaching method was 81.36 ± 10.58. In different areas, the average score of satisfaction from the field of interest and encouragement to participate in learning, lecture method with a significant difference was less than peer education method (p = 0.008), in terms of satisfaction with the observance of principles and regulations the lecture method average score was significantly more than (P = 0.005), in the field of exam and evaluation of the content of the curriculum the average score of lecture was more than without any significant difference (p = 0.07) and in the area of the appropriateness of the teaching method and the continuity of its use, the average student satisfaction score was the same in both methods .
Conclusion
According to the findings of this study, it seems that the use of modern educational methods has a significant effect on increasing interest in learning and motivation in students, however, students prefer the traditional lecture method for better understanding of the content and to observe the teaching principles. Therefore, the use of peers teaching methods, especially in the field of creating interest and encouraging participation in learning, should be considered as a complementary method in teaching these lessons.
