Ditransitive Constructions in Persian within the Framework of Role and Reference Grammar

Using a descriptive-analytical method, the present paper aims to explore ditransitive constructions in Persian within the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) and to analyze their syntactic and semantic structures. It also examines these constructions within Haspelmath’s (2015) typological approach. on the basis of Van Valin’s (2007) approach, the findings of the research show that most ditransitive constructions in Persian follow the universal Actor-Undergoer hierarchy and therefore the Theme argument of these constructions (the last argument in the logical structure) receive the macrorole of Undergoer which results in a prepositional dative construction. On the other hand, within Haspelmath’s (2015) typological approach, results reveal that Persian is among the languages that have indirective alignment in which the object of the monotransitive constructions is coded in the same way as the Theme of the ditransitive constructions.
