The role of age and causes of death changes in increasing life expectancy in Iran during last decade
This study tries to calculate the share of age groups and causes of death in increasing life expectancy in Iran during last decade. Death data is taken from the Ministry of Health, Medicine and Medical Education. Child mortality rate and adult mortality were corrected by hypothetical cohort approach between two censuses and Bennett - Horiuchi method, respectively. Results show that infant mortality has important contribution in increasing life expectancy for two sexes during last decade. Old age groups have more important role in increasing life expectancy for men and women. However, the role of middle age groups in increasing men’s life expectancy is important, too. Changes related to death caused by cardiovascular diseases, especially in women and unintentional accidents especially in men, have been the main causes of increasing of life expectancy in the country. Despite of the positive effect of changes in level and patterns of main causes of death on increasing life expectancy in Iran, there are high potential for more increasing of life expectancy, especially through control of death caused by cancers and cardiovascular disease in men that requires proper health planning.
