Application of Nanomaterials in Treatment of Soft Tissue Disorders
With the ever-increasing use of nanoscience in medicine, a new concept called as nano-biotechnology has attracted a great deal of attention from scientific communities in recent years. Relevant studies are ongoing in the distinct fields of nanoscience, nano-biomechanics and nano-bioelectronics. It has been shown that nanobiomaterials can be successfully utilized in drug delivery systems and also, as medical implants. This is attributed to their outstanding mechanical properties and improved surface characteristics including porosity and roughness at the nanoscale and also, their high permeability into the cell membranes. In the present study, soft tissue diseases are distinguished from their hard tissue counterparts. Accordingly, important factors needed to consider in the selection process of nano-therapeutic materials are thoroughly investigated. Moreover, the most common applications of nanomaterials in treatment of human soft tissues are reviewed.
