Saviors or Colonizers? A Study of the Colonizers’ Power Exertion Strategies in Simin Daneshvar’s Savushun and E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India
Author(s):
Abstract:
The theme of savior is an important concept in post- colonial studies. Edward Said has widely discussed the theme in Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism. Putting forward the colonial discourse theory, he explores the way the colonizers exercise power on other nations through changing the meaning of the concept of savior. This research is an attempt to examine Savushun by Simin Daneshvar and A Passage to India by E. M. Forster using Edward Saeid’s theories. The study shows that some characters of the novels, as the victims of colonial powers, help them achieve their goals through ace-pting the artificial notions which are created by colonizers. One of these noti-ons is the concept of savior. In fact, the colonial powers introduce themselves as saviors of the other nations and individuals who accept them turn into instruments of power which help the colonial powers achieve their goals.
