The Whys and Hows of the Political Relations between Iran and England in the Mongol Ilkhan Era

With the advent of the Ilkhanites in Iran, the political, economic, social and cultural conditions of Iran had changed fundamentally and the effects of those changes remained for years. Formation of a strong and unified government had made important changes to the foreign policy of the country. The Ilkhanes, in pursuit of their goals and domination of the Eastern Mediterranean and overcoming the Egyptian Mamaliks, were interested in establishing a political relationship with the Pope and the Christian European states and sent various delegations to Europe. European governments responded differently to these policies based on their political situation. One of these European governments, which attracted the attention of the Ilkhans, was the British government; a government that had freed from internal disputes and inspired by the Crusader›s Will to fight Muslims.Perhaps this period of relations between Iran and England can be considered as the first period of historical relations between the two countries. The main point of research in this article is to identify the causes and the relationship between the Iranian Ilkhans and the British government.
