The Prevalence of Workaholism among Hospital's Staff: The Role of Attachment to God and Workplace Spirituality

The purpose of the current study was to examine the prevalence of workaholism and the role of attachment to God and spirituality in work in predicting it among hospital’s staff. The research method was a correlation. The statistical population of this study was the whole hospital staffs of Azna (Lorestan province). The statistical sample was 144 female and male staffs working in Azna hospital were selected by the census method. The Short form of Workaholism scale (Del Líbano et al, 2010), Short form of Attachment to God (Ghobary Bonab and Hadadi Kohsar, 2011) and Workplace Spirituality Scale (Milliman et al, 2003) were used to collect the data. Data were analyzed by the Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression and Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA). The results showed that the prevalence of workaholism in all staffs, female and male were 9.76%, 11.3%, and 10.42%, respectively. Results of Pearson correlation showed that the correlation of attachment to God and workplace spirituality with workaholism was negative significantly, and according to regression results, attachment to God and workplace spirituality had a negative role in predicting the workaholism. Results of MANCOVA with controlling the demographic variables revealed that the mean of attachment to God was higher in female than male and mean of workplace spirituality was higher in male than men, but there was no meaningful difference between female and male in the mean of workaholism. According to results, the improvement of attachment to God and workplace spirituality by psychological training based on spirituality was suggested for the hospital's staffs for decreasing the workaholism.
