Hyperbilirubinemia is one of the most common neonatal diseases that affect annually 60 to 70 percent of newborn babies. Jaundice should be treated quickly because of the high risks that threaten the fetus. One of the common treatments in our country is traditional treatments. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect and effectiveness of traditional Iranian-based therapies on neonatal jaundice.
This article is a review research which is conducted based on library studies and search via internet databases of Google Scholar, Sid, Pub Med, and Science Direct by jaundice and traditional treatment keywords over the years 2000 to 2015.
The results of studies on the effect of traditional medicines on neonatal jaundice have had controversy. In some studies, herbal remedies like Manna oral suspensions, oral drops Cotoneaster, Fumitory extracts, Chicory, Cotoneaster, Jujube in the prevention and treatment of neonatal jaundice have been ineffective but in some other studies with therapeutic and extract Cotoneaster Jujube plus phototherapy were effective in reducing jaundice thus seem to be a definitive statement on this issue deserves further study.
The results of the studies indicate that the treatment of jaundice in newborns is not effective with the traditional treatments and the baby should be treated under the supervision of a professional doctor. Since in some studies traditional medicines were combined with conventional treatments such as light therapy, were effective in treating jaundice so if wanted to use these treatments seem it must be associated with current treatments and in such cases it may be recommended with standard products.
