The syntactic changes in the compound sentences of Azerbaijani in contact with Persian
The aim of this research is to study syntactic changes in the compound sentences of Azerbaijani because of its contact with Persian. Data collected from Azerbaijani resources and its speakers (30 people) in Ardabil province. Data analyzing shows that borrowed constituents cause Azerbaijani speakers to choose among alternative structures one corresponding to Persian structure (right branching complement clause, analytic causative clause, post head relative clause and dependent clause with conjunction in initial position). The syntactic structures created are not alien to Azerbaijani. Azerbaijani speakers use strategies such as narrowing and extending to increase the frequency of some structures matching those of Persian. The syntactic changes are employed to achieve non-syntactic goal (but rather pragmatic in nature) and they result in Azerbaijani progressive convergence to Persian.
