Abstract:
Introduction

One of the common problems in patients undergoing open heart surgery is anxiety which
can have unwanted consequences. This paper aims to determine the complications caused by the presence of anxiety in patients candidate of cardiac surgery has also introduced types of methods deal with anxiety, such as Benson´s relaxation as has been writing.

Materials and Methods

This paper is a review article based on data which has been resulted from internet searches in Science direct, SID, Google Scholar and Pub med databases and library sources, scientific articles and journals published in 2000-2014 have been used.

Results

Anxiety is the most common psychological reactions in response to stress and all human
beings confronted with life-threatening situations such as invasive diagnostic procedures and surgeries that experience. Continuing state of anxiety increases the body’s metabolism rate and oxygen consumption, and puts the patients at risk. So far, there are several ways to deal with of anxiety, but because of the cost and high complication presented have been less welcomed. Relaxation is one of the nursing strategies that is can be used as a complementary treatment and nonpharmacological named. Relaxation several methods, but the method was introduced in 1970 by Herbert Benson due to easy learning and education is preferred over other methods of relaxation. Benson´s relaxation one of the respiratory relaxation to reduce the anxiety and improving the proper treatment method of heart disease.

Discussion and Conclusion

Due to the multitude of patients candidate for open heart surgery and anxiety caused by surgery, especially in cardiac surgery, paying attention to ways of preventing and reducing anxiety, is emphasis placed. Therefore, Due to the high cost and side effects of pharmacological drugs to control anxiety and dependency, Nurses pleasant to nonpharmacological methods such as Benson´s relaxation to reduce the level of anxiety in patients candidate for open heart surgery use.
