Health literacy and health promoting life style are one of the most important determinants of health and their benefit can increase health behaviors, improve access to health care and are essential for maintaining and controlling health. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between health literacy and health promoting life style among medical students of Hamadan.
This descriptive-analytical study was performed on 382 medical students of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Data were collected using Iranian Adult Health Literacy Questionnaire (HELIA) and Health Promoting Behaviors (HPLP-ll). The data were analyzed by SPSS 21 software using descriptive statistics as well as chi-square, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation.
The mean score of students' health literacy was 126.13 (19.28). 67% (n = 260) of them had excellent and desirable health literacy and total score of health promoting behaviors was evaluated with 51.1% of achievable score at undesirable level. It was also found that health promoting behaviors with health literacy dimensions included: access (r = 0.404), reading (r = 0.324), understanding (r = 0.354), evaluation (r = 0.410). ) And decision making and use of health information (r = 0.552) had a significant positive correlation (P <0.01). Also, there was a positive and significant correlation between health promoting behaviors and all aspects of health literacy (P <0.01).
The findings of this study showed that students' health promotion life style increased with increasing health literacy. Therefore, designing and implementing educational interventions to empower students in health literacy is recommended.
