The Role of Psychological Capital (Self-efficacy, Hope, Resilience, and Optimism) in Student Achievement Motivation

The achievement motivation is one of the factors affecting the success and academic achievement for students. According to previous research, achievement motivation is influenced by several factors. This study aimed to investigate the role of psychological capital (self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism) In order to predict the student achievement motivation. In this correlational study, 260 students in dormitories of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences were selected through cluster sampling method. In order to collect data, Luthans et al Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Hermans Achievement Motivation Questionnaire were used. Data were analyzed through SPSS-18 software. Results showed that there was positive significant relationship between the psychological capital, self-efficacy (r=0.273), resilience (r=0.221), hope (r=0.368), optimism (r=0.369) and achievement motivation (P<0.01). Also, the results of regression showed that optimism, hope and self-efficacy variables were able to explain 0.25 of variance of achievement motivation in students. Considering that psychological capital plays an important role in the student achievement motivation, it is necessary to pay attention to this in the planning of the higher education system in order to achieve the academic success of the students.
