Efficacy of the family-centered empowerment model on the adherence to the treatment in diabetic patients with heart disorders

Abstract:
Introduction

Diabetes is categorized under the group of multifactorial disorders in metabolic system, in which chronic increase of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is considered as the main symptom of the disease. Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes serious damage in various parts of the body including the nervous system, cardiovascular system, eyes, kidneys and legs. During treatment, the patient plays a major role in the treatment of diabetes and patients' knowledge in different treatment steps is very important. The main reasons of unsuccessful treatment of diabetes patients are lack of information about the disease process and lack of their participation in the treatment. Note, self-care education to patients and their families will have an important role in preventing and treating diabetes, which also improves the life quality and reduce the cost of patient's treatment. This study reviews the impact of family education in improvement patients.

Materials and Methods

In this study researchers review the English and Persian articles and databases such as Google scholars, SID, PubMed, and ... by using diabetes, treatment, family-centered empowerment model as key words, 2000-2013. In this study the effect of different variables affecting the families of diabetes education were discussed.

Results

According to investigations, education and adherence to treatment can control side- effects of diabetes, decreases the cost of treatment, increase life style and in order to achieve this aim we should empower the family of patients.

Discussion and Conclusion

According to studies on education of people who are involved with diabetes directly or indirectly, it was found that these educational programs raise awareness and the recovery process has been very influential on patients and their families. Hence it is suggested that the education of patients families and peoples with a genetic predisposition of diabetes as much as possible to prevent spread of the disease. Workshops, recruitment of experienced nurses, notification on internet sites, providing individual consultations with expert advisors are useful strategies to educate patients and their families.
