According to the pathogenesis of diabetes and, on the other hand, the necessity of continuing treatment with insulin injections, applying lifestyle-adjusting methods is the most important step for effective control along with maintaining mental and physical health and encouraging people to pursue treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of carbohydrate counting in type 1 diabetic patients.
This is a review study. The search was performed using keywords such as type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, insulin, carbohydrate counts in Persian and English on valid databases including PubMed, Wiley, Elsevier, Science Direct and SID From 2000to 2019, and papers were evaluated.
The findings indicated that two concepts should be considered to apply carbohydrate counting method. In the first step, the insulin sensitivity factor (Rule 1800 and Rule 1500) and in the second step, insulin to carbohydrate ratio (Rule 500, 450 and Rule 300). Finally, the total amount of insulin calculated by the amount of insulin needed to modify preprandial and prandial glucose level. Adjusting insulin levels based on carbohydrate counting is effective in control of glycemic status, nutritional pattern, flexibility and enhancing quality of life
