Abstract:

Tanāwub and syntactic taḍmīn are regarded as two norm-evading terms in the standard language syntactic. Tanāwub means a word leaving its main meaning for another meaning, but syntactic taḍmīn means a single verb intermixing two meanings in itself; one meaning is obtained through wording and the other through the evidences existing in the sentence and its main benefit is brevity in wording and inclusiveness in meaning. Among various translation methods, the semantic translation is the most suitable method for translating such terms. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this research is intended to examine the exact meaning of tanāwub and syntactic taḍmīnand the relevant problems as well as studying them in the most eminent contemporary translations and the requisites of their translation in the Holy Qur’an. Surveys show that in most cases no accurate equivalent mentioning all semantic components has been designated for the term mutināwib (alternative) in the Persian translations.
