An Overview of the Factors Affecting the Intention of Nurse Turnover

A huge challenge and concern in the world for nurses is the shortage of nurses and their high tendency to leave this profession has risen as, which will impact on the quality of care dramatically. Various factors and conditions lead to nurse turnover. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors affecting the intention to leave the service.

Material and Methods

The present study is a review article compiled using data from library resources and databases of Elsevier, Google Scholar, PubMed & Science Direct as well as the Academic Information Center of Academic Jihad University. Initially, 100 articles containing the keywords turnover, nurses, leadership and management from the years 2004 and 2018 were searched and then 52 articles were used.


Desertion intention might affect one’s perception and mental norms in the future even though he or she is still working. This phenomenon in the health system leads to a decrease in the quality of patient care, an increase in the length of hospital stay and medical expenses, etc. Having reviewed the research conducted in this respect, it was found out that some factors such as lack of supporting nurses in their workplace by their managers, lack of progress and promotion, expanding job opportunities outside the hospital, role conflict, etc. play crucial roles in turnover intention.

Discussion and Conclusion

more attention must be paid to the nurses turnover due to the significance of nurses role in the health system.and nurses turnover have negative impact on the quality of care and health care system, effective strategies must be happened such as paying proper salaries, improving relations between managers and employees, creating opportunities for progress and promotion, paying attention to the welfare of the personnel and providing acceptable welfare services in order to maintain human resources and improve the quality of care and health.
