Evaluation of Seismic Response of Linked Column with Simple Frame System

Abstract:

In this Research, seismic response of linked column with simple frame system has been evaluated as a new structural system. Linked column with simple frame is a new idea of a structural steel frame system that has an advanced seismic response against earthquakes. The purpose of the designing frame is achieving a fast repairable building after an earthquake with replacing some members. In this paper, behavior of the new system has been checked in a comparison to other common structural steel frame systems with the same conditions as well, and in first part Special linked column with simple frame system (LCS) is comparing with special concentrically braced frame system (CBF) and special moment resistance frame system (MRF) in 1 to 9 story buildings. The results of this part indicated into graphs of base shear, steel weight, uplift force, period times, maximum story drift and maximum lateral displacements (roof displacement) of 1 to 9 story models of structural steel frame systems researched. Based on these results, elastic response of LCS system is similar to other structural systems and based on this feature, analyse and design of this system (LCS) is possible to use linear analysis methods.
In the next part seismic performance parameters of linked column with simple frame system will be qualified by the use of pushover curves, similar procedure described in FEMA P695. And this results indicate that Behavior Factor of 8 (Ru=8), Overstrength Factor of 3 (Ω0=3) and deflection amplification factor of 5.5 (Cd=5.5) is proper for this system. Finally the capacity of structural stability and collapse mechanism of LCS models according to nonlinear dynamic time history analysis has been evaluated by scaled 14 ground motion records to the design base earthquake. And the coming result is indicated based on maximum interstory drift for LCS models. This results indicate mean quantity of maximum interstory drift for all LCS models is below as 2 percent and this system has the capability of structural stability under the earthquake records. The plastic hinge spreading and beginning (collapse mechanism) in nonlinear analysis indicate LCS system has the capability of certain design targets.
After evaluation of LCS system with different ways of structural analysis, primary principles and criteria are represented for appropriate optimum design for this system. The consequences of this primary research indicate, the response of linked column with simple frame is acceptable as a new structural steel frame system. And this system is optimum and economically designed for 1 to 6 story building or also buildings with the maximum height of 20 meters, in terms of consumptive steel weight in structural frame. This system has the capability of its main feature, which is achieving a fast repairable building right after earthquake with replacing some members, as if the building will have the capability of resisting earthquake after the fast simple repairing. Thus linked column with simple frame (LCS) in a primary Evaluation of Seismic Response is presented as a new structural steel frame system. Naturally this system needed to more research in all necessary fields.
