The Moderating Role of Self-Compassion Components in the Relationship between Neuroticism and Depression Symptoms
The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating role of self-compassion components in the relationship between neuroticism and depressive symptoms in adolescents. This research was a correlational research. The statistical population of the study consisted of all high school students of Khorramabad's high school in the academic year of 2019-2020, out of which 203 students were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling in a 3-month period. The instruments of the present study were Eysenck Adolescents Personality Questionnaire (JEPQ), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Data were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis. The results showed that neuroticism had a significant positive correlation with depressive symptoms. Also, also kindness toward oneself has a negative correlation with depressive symptoms, and over-imitation has a positive correlation with depressive symptoms. Self-judgment and isolation are positively correlated with depressive symptoms. In addition, human shared and mindfulness have a negative correlation with depressive symptoms. The results of regression analysis showed that mindfulness and human shared are the only variables that can modulate the relationship between neuroticism and depressive symptoms. According to the findings of this study, the relationship between neuroticism and depressive symptoms is not a simple linear relationship and self-compassion components can moderate this relationship.
