Spiritual Well-Being and its Demographic-Medical related factors in Patients with Intestinal Ostomy
Ostomy has a profound effect on patients' quality of life. Spiritual well-being can improve the quality of life of these people. This study was performed to examine the spiritual well-being and the related medical-demographic factors in ostomates.
This Cross sectional descriptive-analytical study was conducted in ostomy patients with simple sampling methodology. Information collected through a questionnaire with two parts: medical- demographic information and Palutzian & Ellison SWB questionnaire .The data was analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics (ANOVA, independent t-Test, Pearson correlation coefficient test) with using SPSSv17 software.
The majority (61.5%) of the study participants had a moderate level of spiritual health. Mean and standard deviation of spiritual health score was 97.40 ±14.81 (from 120). There was a significant relationship between spiritual health and some medical-demographic variables including age, marital status, educational level, occupation, type of ostomy and duration of ostomy (P <0.05).
The spiritual health of the majority of participants was moderate. Whereas spiritual attitude and well-being are positively correlated with different aspects of quality of life in ostomates; nurses can play an important role in improving the quality of life of these patients by designing and implementing appropriate spiritual care.
