Manifest Dream Content and Attachment style: Mediating Role of Autobiographical Memory

Abstract:

This study aimed to predict manifest dream content by attachment style with respect to mediating role of autobiographical memory. The statistical population included all bachelor students in the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Tehran University who studied in the second semester of the academic year 2019-2020, 434 people were randomly selected from this population. All participants completed the Attachment Styles Questionnaire (Hazan and Shivar, 1978), Autobiographical Memory Test (Williams & Broadbent, 1986), Manifest Dream Content (Mousavipoor et al., 2015), and the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (1990). Data were analyzed by structural equations modeling. Results showed a significant relationship between manifest dream content and attachment style mediated by autobiographical memory. In addition, positive and negative biographical memory had a significant relationship with dream content on the past recurrence, nightmares, death, and illness. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that dreams rooted in the developmental history and its content is mediated by the autobiographical memory.
