Abstract:
Background

The members of a medical team especially critical care nurses experience the most level of tension due to work pressure and less rest time. The highest level of stress has an adverse effect on their sleep quality. This study was conducted with the aim of assessing the quality of sleep among nurses in critical care units of educational- therapeutic centers of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences.

Methods

This study was a descriptive –correlational research that was performed on 180 nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of the hospitals of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences in 2015 who were selected by stratified random sampling. The data were collected using job and individual information profile questionnaire and Pittsburg s sleep quality questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics (for quantitative and qualitative variables from mean ± standard deviation and absolute and relative frequency tables respectively)  and inferential statistics (Chi-square, independent t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and logistic regression) and were analyzed by SPSS software version 18.

Findings

Results show that 38 percent had proper sleep quality and 61.7 percent had improper sleep quality. The logistic regression model also showed that shifts in the factor for having poor sleep quality were independent of other variables. The study results showed that 38 % of nurses had a proper sleep quality and 61.7 % had a poor sleep quality. The logistic regression model also showed that rotation in shifts is a factor for having low sleep quality independently of other variables (p = 0.005). The results of the study also showed that there was not observed relationship between variables such as gender (p = 0.096, age (p = 0.764), marital status (p = 0. 585), work experience (p = 0.708), job position P=0.099), the number of night shifts (p = 0.276), service charge time (p = 0.60) and place of work (P = 0.151) with the sleep quality of nurses.

Conclusion

Given the findings of this study it is necessary to proper planning will be conducted to increase the sleep quality. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the work environment and the quality of work life in the nurses.
