Family caregivers are among the first and foremost members involved in the pursuit of care and care for the elderly. Recognizing the extent of resilience and the factors that affect it can be effective in planning support for family caregivers and maintaining their health.
The aim of this study was to determine the resiliency of family caregivers of elderly with Chronic disease in Tehran.
This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2019 on 110 caregivers of elderly patients with chronic diseases hospitalized in medical centers of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Elderly people who had a score equal to or less than 11 in terms of daily living activities. Patients and caregivers were selected by non-randomized and available method based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected using demographic information form, daily living activities questionnaire and resiliency questionnaire (CONNOR-DAVIDSON) and analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using SPSS 22 software.
The mean age of the caregivers was (77.37 ± 9.23.) Sixty-five (55.5%) of the elderly were in need of assistance with daily living activities and 49 (45.5%) were dependent. Out of 110 caregivers, 83 (75.5%) were female and 27 (24.5%) were male with mean age: (47.03 ± 10.71). Resiliencey of Caregivers were in good agreement with mean (66.87 ± 16.27). There was no significant statistically relationship between caregiver resilience score with age, gender, and ADL levels of the elderly (p <0.050). Also no statistically significant relationship was observed between the resilience score and demographic characteristics of caregivers (p> 0.050).
The resilience of family caregivers was in a good range above the cutting line and independent of the demographic characteristics of caregivers as well as independent of the different characteristics of the elderly. It is suggested that more support be provided to family caregivers to increase their resilience in the care of the elderly with chronic Diseases.
