Abstract:
Introduction

InPerceiving the spatiotemporal relationship between land use changes and groundwater quantity is highly crucial for effective and sustainable management of prohibited plains. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between land use changes and groundwater quantity in Hamadan north prohibited plains.

Material and methods

To this aim, land use maps of 1989, 1997, 2005, 2013 and 2018 were extracted from Landsat satellite images, and then categorized and investigated. In addition, a 5-year water depth distribution map for was provided from piezometric data by kriging method.Relationship between land use changes and groundwater quantity was investigated by REGRESS methods.

Results and discussion

The results indicate that the groundwater drop over three recent studied periods (2005, 2013 and 2018) has been more intense. Drastic reduction of gardening and arid lands, and rangelands, relative decline of irrigated farming lands and the increase of the dried farming lands and residential regions are the consequences of land use changes. In addition, the depth of groundwater over recent 30 years in Razan and Kaboodarahang has reduced to a mean of 0.87 and 1.57 meter, respectively. R in Razan and Kaboodarahang in the studied periods were obtained 0.06-0.15 and 0.015-0.15, respectively.

Conclusion

The results show the ability of RS and GIS techniques and statistical models based on regression analyses for investigating the relationship between land use changes and groundwater quantity. In addition, the results can be effective for managing, planning and policy making the groundwater resources in prohibited plains, particularly in Hamadan north prohibited plains. Further, the results can be applied for identifying and selecting the prioritized places in order to manage the uses and groundwater resources
